Sondra B. Salyer
April 6th, 1937 - April 29th, 2015
Sondra B. Salyer, 78, of Kingsport, Tennessee passed away unexpectedly at home, Wednesday, April 29, 2015. She was born April 6, 1937 in Big Stone Gap, VA and grew up in Kingsport. She graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 1955 and was looking forward to her upcoming 60 year class reunion. She retired from Northern Telecom after working for several years as an assistant to the Vice President. Sondra also worked for many years as a teacher's aide for the Sullivan County School System, and was passionately involved with PTA, serving at local and state levels. Mrs. Salyer was a faithful wife, incredible mother and super "Granny", her life was committed to loving and serving others. She was an active member of Vermont United Methodist Church and loved teaching children's Sunday School. She was very involved with UMW at multiple capacities, including Secretary of Communications and President. Sondra had a heart for missions, and enjoyed trips to Red Bird Mission and Lake Junaluska. She loved meeting and serving with others throughout the Holston Conference. She was preceded in death by her parents, James P. Barron and Sue Barron. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 55 years, Bill Salyer, Kingsport, TN; daughter, Leslie Hall and husband, Tom; sons, Kevin Salyer and wife, Paige; Preston Salyer and wife, Gina; granddaughters, Chelsea Phillips (Colby), Megan Norris (Brandon), Traci Harris; sisters Janet Barron and Sally Quillin; a special cousin, Sandy Ekren. Calling hours will be held on Saturday (May 2, 2015) from 4 pm to 7 pm at Vermont United Methodist Church or friends may also call anytime at the residence. A celebration of life service will be held at 7 pm at the church with Rev. Jared Wood, officiating. Music will be provided by the family. A graveside service will be conducted on Sunday (May 3, 2015) at 2 pm at Oak Hill Cemetery. Family and friends attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:45 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Vermont United Methodist Church, Love Meals, 1817 Bloomingdale Road, Kingsport, Tennessee 37660.
