Mr. Oren (Guy) Starnes passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Nova Rehabilitation Center in Weber City, Virginia, at the age of 86 years. He was born, raised and lived all his life in Hill Station in Scott County, Virginia. He graduated from Rye Cove High School in 1946. After graduation he served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. During the war, he was wounded in service and received the Purple Heart and Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Star. Guy worked for Eastman Kodak in the Research Labs for almost 40 years. After retirement he loved to garden, go to the NASCAR races, attend bluegrass music shows and the most important thing was spending time with his family and friends. He was predeceased by his Father (J. W. Starnes) and Mother (Josie France Starnes). He was also predeceased by a grandson (Matthew Starnes), his brother (Ivan Starnes), sister (Dorothy Winters) and his infant sister (Rebus Starnes). He was a member of Rivermont Baptist Church but in later years attended Oak Glen Baptist church in Scott County, VA. He leaves behind the love of his life, his wife of 63 years, Thelma Smith Starnes. He also leaves behind his two son's, Michael (Linda) of Mt. Carmel, TN and Allen (Jennifer) of Gate City, VA. The Starnes family will receive friends on Saturday, February 28, from 2 pm to 4 pm at Scott County Funeral Home (Carter Trent) in Weber City, VA. Funeral services will follow at 4 pm. Pastor Danny Sykes and Pastor Lester Morelock will officiate. Music will be provided by Dale Smith and the Oak Glen singers. Burial be on Sunday, March 1, 2015 at 2 pm at Holston View Cemetery in Weber City Virginia with Military graveside rites presented by the American Legion Post 3/265 and the Virginia National Guard. Friends and family are to meet at the cemetery by 1:45pm. Honorary Pallbearers are Rollin Dykes, Charles Grizzle, Ben Vernon, Dennis Grizzle, David and Cody Horton, Don Flick and Dwight Smith. In lieu of flowers, the family request that if you would like to make a donation in memory of Guy, please send your donations to the St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Mr. Starnes' family would like to thank friends and family, doctor's and staff for being so kind during this very difficult time and especially for all the prayers.
