Paul Ray Garrett
December 12th, 1948 - January 20th, 2015
2nd Corinthians 5:1 For we know that if the tent, that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." Paul Ray Garrett, 66, of Church Hill passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday (January 20th, 2015). Paul was born in Pennington Gap on December 12, 1948. He lived most of his life in Dryden but had resided in Church Hill for the past 13 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War. He worked at Powell Mtn and Westmoreland Coal Companies for 20 years. Paul enjoyed laughter, was an avid sports fan and animal lover. His great hobby was bowling and when he was in good health, bowled on various leagues in the community. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Cornie Harber Garrett; a brother and sister in law, Elmer and Billie Joe Garrett; brother in law, Fred Irvin and a brother, Harold Garrett. He is survived by his daughter and son in law, Katina and J.T. Rose of Kingsport; son and daughter in law, Josh and Lily Garrett of San Diego, CA; the light of his life, his granddaughters, Corinne and Sasha Rose of Kingsport; his ex-wife of 33 years of marriage, Sherry Bruce of Surgoinsville; two brothers, Carlos Garrett and wife Agnes, Wayne Garrett and wife Johnnie, of Pennington Gap; two sisters, Loretta Rutherford and husband Ken of Martinsville, IN and Faye Irvin of Noblesville, IN. He was special to many nieces and nephews and friends. The family will receive friends from 5 till 7pm Thursday (January 22nd, 2015) at Scott County Funeral Home. A service will follow at 7pm with Pastor David Parkey officiating. A graveside service will be conducted at 1pm Friday at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, VA. Military graveside service will be presented by the American Legion Post 3/ 265 and the Virginia National Guard. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:45pm. Those desiring may make memorials to the American Legion P.O. Box 66 Kingsport, Tennessee 37662 or to the Kingsport Animal Shelter 2141 Idle Hour Road, Kingsport, TN 37660.
