September 2nd, 1952 - October 19th, 2010
"South Hadley, Karen J. Kareta, 58, of Brainerd St. died Tuesday, October 19 at home. Born in Holyoke, September 2, 1952, she was the daughter of Frederick and Josephine (Strzempko) Kareta. A graduate of the Elms College, Karen began her career as a social worker for the Welfare Dept. in Holyoke. For the past 22 years she has been teaching in Holyoke Public Schools, most recently at McMahon School. She was a member of the Holyoke Teachers Association, Mass. Teachers Association and the National Education Association. Karen will be deeply missed by her sister Connie Barre and her husband Roger of Belleville, IL, her brother Fred Kareta and his wife Kathryn of Westfield along with her nieces Kerry Kareta, Kelly and Steve West, Jessica and Tom Ysursa, great nieces and nephews, Matthew and Peytyn West, Drew, Dylan, Sophie and Ben Ysursa. She also leaves her uncles Frank and John Strzempko, aunts Helen Leonczyk, Emily Zoladz, and Jean Kurdziel, and many cousins, including Walter Pietras, as well as her dear friend, Pat Colton. Besides her parents, her nephew "Joe" Kareta and her beloved Tom Stevenson preceded her in death. Friends and family may gather Tuesday, October 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Beers & Story S. Hadley Funeral Home, 646 Newton St. to proceed to a Mass at Mater Dolorosa Church to begin at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday, October 25 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Beers & Story S. Hadley Funeral Home.
