James Long
September 23rd, 1955 - September 5th, 2006
"James Long, 50, of King St., died September 5 at Bay State Medical Center. Born in Holyoke, September 23, 1955, he was the son of the late Charles “Chick” Long and Louise (Callahan) Matewski. Jim grew up in S. Hadley and served his country in the Navy during Vietnam. He has lived in Pelham since 1992 and was a graduate of the Massachusetts Police Academy. He was a police officer for the Pelham Police Department from 2001 – 2005. He had also worked for Louis Pallotta Paving in Agawam for many years. Jim was a member of the Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club Inc., and the Knights of Columbus. He will be deeply missed by his wife Nancy (Dodge) Long and his daughter, Cassie Long, along with his step children Dan Myers and Stephanie Myers all at home, and Alyssa Walder of Bondsville. He also leaves two brothers- Daniel of Belchertown, and Steven of Highland, IL, and four sisters Tina Shirley of Yucca Valley, CA, Lynda King of Holyoke, Mary Long of S. Hadley, and Heather Grincavitch of Westfield. Jim also leaves his step mother Lucille Long of Ellington, CT and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by his stepfather Zigmund Matewski. A service to honor his life will be Monday, September 11 at 10:00 a.m. in the Beers & Story Belchertown Funeral Home, 10 Maple St., (Rte. 202) followed by burial in South Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. For those wishing, donations may be made to the James Long Memorial Fund, for the benefit of his daughter Cassie, c/o Country Bank for Savings, Ware, 01082."
