Mary Louise Lopez, 87, of Falls Church, Virginia passed away peacefully on June 16th, 2021 at Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington, VA. She was born to Richard McDermott and Louise Gallo on May 9th, 1934 in Catskill, NY. She graduated from St. Patrick’s Academy in Catskill, New York and received a Registered Nurse (RN) from St. Peters Hospital School of Nursing. She married the late German Lopez in 1955 and they lived in New York City; Bogota, Colombia; and Quito, Ecuador before relocating to Falls Church, Virginia in 1971. Mary Louise is survived by 5 children: Eileen (Peter) of Oahu, HI; Dan (Lisa) of Elida, OH; German (Isabel) of Centreville, VA; James (Efrem) of Alexandria, VA; and John (Adam) of Washington, DC. She is also survived by her sisters Evelyn Lail of Albany, NY and Barbara McGuire of Atlanta, GA, as well as by 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Mary Louise was predeceased by her loving husband of 46 years in 2000. Mary Louise was an avid music lover. She had a huge heart always helping others, volunteering at many institutions including voter registration campaigns, cancer societies, Spanish language clubs and many others. She was a lifetime member of PFLAG and a supporter of LGBTQ organizations. She was a 3-time cancer survivor and participated in many cancer support events. In her later years she loved puzzles, word search games and reading books. Most of all, she loved spending time with family. Donations may be made in support of the Koman Breast Cancer Foundation, or the American Cancer Society in lieu of sending flowers.
