Philip Herrera
August 23rd, 1932 - September 14th, 2018
Philip Herrera of Charlotte, NC, died at home on September 14, 2018 at age 86. Born August 23, 1932, Phil was one of 13 children of the late Daniel Herrera and Maria Gutierrez Herrera. He was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Elizabeth Ann Holliday Herrera, and by his brothers Peter Herrera, John Herrera, Louie Herrera, and sisters Emily Herrera and Mary Herrera. Survivors of Philip include his son, Cameron Herrera (wife Chris) of Charlotte, NC and his daughter Heather Martin (husband Gary) of Mount Pleasant, NC, along with his grandchildren Alexandria Martin, Elizabeth Martin, Elijah Martin, Logan Herrera, C. Reid Herrera, and Grayson Herrera, and great-grandchildren Tannon Burris and Gunner Manley. He is also survived by brothers George Herrera, Daniel Herrera Jr. (wife Joan), and Rolando Herrera (wife Karen) and sisters Tina Patterson, Carmen Szydlowski (husband Ronald), Delores Ostrander and Juanita Herrera as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Phil served with the Marines in Korea and was an Airborne veteran of the US Army primarily stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC. He served several tours with the Army in Vietnam, He retired after more than 23 years of total military service. He later worked at the former Hoechst Celanese, where he retired after more than 20 years of employment. Phil was gregarious and truly loved being with people. He lived in the Dilworth neighborhood for over 30 years, and enjoyed his many friends and neighbors. He was a fixture “walking” his dog Scout (carried in his arms) daily.
