Dorothea M. Ashworth
December 27th, 1922 - August 9th, 2016
"Amherst- Dorothea "Dot" M. (Herty) Ashworth, 93, of Amherst passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at Hadley at Elaine Center. Born in Cambridge, MA on December 27, 1922 she was a daughter of the late Charles and Kathleen Herty. Dorothea served as a specialist gunnery in the US Navy during WWII. She worked as a newspaper reporter for Holyoke Transcript and also taught English at Granby Junior High School. Dot devoted most of her life to her children and to community service. She was a member of Center Church in South Hadley and was vice president of Orchard Golf Club. Dorothea was a lifelong golfer and bridge player. She was predeceased by her first husband, Joseph W. Tropp in 1972. Dot leaves her loving husband of 44 years, Dennis H. Ashworth; her three sons, Michael Tropp and his wife Elisa, Joseph Tropp, and Stephen Tropp and his wife Debbie; her two daughters, Chris Orlen and her husband Michael, and Barbara Ford and her husband Alan; her grandchildren, Dana Gabriel, Casey, Evan, Matthew, Mikhaela, Olivia, and Tatum Tropp; her great-grandchild, Caden Tropp; her sister, Roo Brown of DE; and her two brothers, Charles Herty, III of TX and Timothy Herty and his wife Lois of MD. Along with her first husband, Dorothea was predeceased by her daughter, Deborah Galen Tropp. The family wishes to thank the staff members on the Leeds unit of Elaine Center at Hadley for their expertise, their compassionate care of Dorothea and their great kindness to her family, and to the Arbors staff, with special thanks to Maggie Essis, Sheknail and Judi Jackson. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at 10am directly at Center Church, 1 Church St, followed by burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Hadley St, both in South Hadley. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60601 or to Dakin Humane Society, 171 Union St, Springfield, MA 01105 or 163 Montague Rd, Leverett, MA 01054. For more information please visit beersandstory.com. "
