Alice Louise Black Jarrell
November 18th, 1923 - August 31st, 2019
Alice Louise Black Jarrell, 95, passed away on August 31, 2019 in Virginia Beach. Born in Charlotte, NC, she was the daughter of Campbell Parham and Thomas Wilder Black. Her beloved husband and best friend, Richard Kennedy Jarrell preceded her in death. They were inseparable throughout their 62 years of marriage. Also preceding her in death were her brothers, John and Robert Black, her sisters Joy Black and Mary Ann Butler, and her son-in-law Captain Michael John Smith, USN. Alice was a lifelong resident of Charlotte. She graduated from Central High School and Carolina Business College. Alice worked for some years as executive assistant at W. G. Jarrell Machine Company and then for many years at the Belk Department Store in South Park. She was a lifelong member of Calvary United Methodist Church and a member of the Calvary United Methodist Women and Bill Cobb Sunday School Class. Alice was involved in a myriad of church activities and social events. She loved being active and spending time with her lifelong friends. Her greatest passion was her family who she adored. Often surrounded by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, her joy was evident in her beautiful smile and laughter. The deep love for her family was mutual as they enjoyed creating memories during her travels to all areas of the country where her family members live. Alice was known for her kindness, compassion and generosity. Alice is survived by daughter and son-in-law Jane Jarrell Smith Wolcott and Dr. Hugh Dixon Wolcott of Virginia Beach; brothers Joe and Richard Black; sisters-in-law Ruby Black, Ann Jarrell, and Pat Stokes; grandchildren and spouses Scott and Cynthia Smith, Alison and Glen Balch, Erin and David Ringgold, James and Bea Wolcott, and Allison Wolcott and Michael San Filippo; great grandchildren Addison and Michael Smith, Anna and Lauren Balch, Amelia Ringgold, Felix, Diego and Lucia Wolcott, and Ben San Filippo. All of whom, she loved deeply. We are grateful to Alice’s niece Donna Butler for her steady and loving care of Alice during her years in Charlotte. In her last days, Alice would often remark that she wanted to go home. We celebrate her good and long life and are comforted in her now finding peace with her wish being granted through the grace of God. On Saturday, September 14, 2019 at Calvary United Methodist Church, Charlotte, NC, the family will receive friends at a 1:00 visitation, followed by the funeral service at 2:00. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 4601 Freedom Drive, Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Calvary United Methodist Church, 512 West Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203. The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the staff at Atria Senior Living in Virginia Beach, Medi Home Health & Hospice, Seniorcorp Personal Care Team, and to the staff at Brighton Gardens of Charlotte.

The growth of our service and the community's support led to our move in March 1963 to the current location—once St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, built in 1930. Our chapel, a cherished historic landmark within the storied Dilworth neighborhood, is renowned for being the only funeral home in Charlotte graced with its own chapel, echoing with decades of history and serenity....
