John Edward (Eddie) Hughes, Jr., 59, went home to Jesus on Sunday, May 24, 2020, following complications from diabetes. Eddie was born in Savannah, GA and graduated from H.V. Jenkins High School and Savannah Technical College with a Certificate in Electrical Apprenticeship. He was preceded in death by his parents John Edward Hughes, Sr. and Cassie Newton Hughes. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Laura Freeman Hughes, sister Mary Helen Hughes, daughter Sara Hughes (George) Holcombe, son John Edward (Jessica) Hughes, III, grandchildren Jacob Tanner Holcombe, Nicholas Todd Holcombe, Brianna Annette McMahan, Angela Mackenzie Hughes, Levonzie McClendon Holcombe, Cassie Grace Hughes, John Corrie Hughes and Tajaee Young. Also surviving are his sister-in-law Jan Leslie Therrien, niece Jessica Mary Therrien (Meagan Stonaker), great-nephews Matthew and Ephraim Ericksen, and great-niece Peyton Austin. He was a faithful member of First Christian Church Charlotte, NC; where he served on the Board of Deacons, the Pastoral Relations Committee, the Board of Trustees, the Property Committee, the Christian Men’s Fellowship and the Renovation/Renaissance Project, where he supervised the construction and renovation of the Education Building. Fish fry and BBQ fundraising for his church and spending time with his grandkids were his passions. He shared a love of cars and trucks with his father and his son; and the “art” of fast pitch softball with his daughter. Remembrances may be sent to the General Fund or Building Fund at First Christian Church, 1200 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203. Our services are crafted to honor your loved ones in ways that are both deeply meaningful and healing. Our rich history began in 1946 when Irvin W. Hankins and James B. Whittington took the reins of the Crouch Funeral Home. The growth of our service and the community's support led to our move in March 1963 to the current location—once St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, built in 1930. Our chapel, a cherished historic landmark within the storied Dilworth neighborhood, is renowned for being the only funeral home in Charlotte graced with its own chapel, echoing with decades of history and serenity....
