Hugh Adamson
October 21st, 1923 - May 17th, 2013
"South Hadley - Hugh Adamson, 89, of Westbrook Rd, passed away surrounded by his family, on May 17, 2013 at home. He was born October 21, 1923 in Banbridge, County Down, Northern Ireland, son of the late William and Martha (Orr) Adamson. He was the oldest of nine children. Hugh was raised in Northern Ireland, and joined the British Army at age sixteen. He was in the 2nd Battalion of the 1st British Airborne Division. He saw action in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and was at the Bridge in Arnhem. He was a prisoner of war two times and back home was considered a war hero. Hugh lived in South Hadley for over 50 years. He was past president of both the Holyoke and Springfield Painters Union. He was a painting instructor at Westover Job Corps. In his leisure, he enjoyed fishing and gardening, he was especially proud of his tomatoes plants. Hugh also enjoyed long trips on country roads and sitting at Brunelle's Marina watching the river. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 61 years, Mary (Bessette) Adamson, a daughter Susan Kosior both of S. Hadley and a son David Adamson of Ashfield, MA. He will be especially missed by the love of his life, Melissa Kosior his granddaughter of S. Hadley. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at the Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home. A Graveside service will be Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in S.Hadley. In lieu of flowers, Hughie would tell you to enjoy a pint. "
