Toby Sykes
May 3rd, 1981 - August 29th, 2021
John Boyd Sykes, affectionately known as "Toby", 40, of Charlotte passed away peacefully on Sunday August 29th, 2021. Born on Sunday May 3rd, 1981 in Charlotte to his late father William Roger Sykes, and Mother Susan Lynn Coley. Toby attended West Mecklenburg High School. Toby had a giving heart and caring soul for all of nature's creatures. "Wouldn't hurt a fly" is a very suiting phrase. Toby genuinely enjoyed all cliche activities such has exploring mountain trails, long walks on a beach, and romantic nights by a fire with his loving husband, partner, companion of 13 years Stephen Kurzman. Toby was a technology addict, online gamer, and closeted Sci Fi/Comic enthusiast. Globally his friends known him to be a prankster, a joke-ster, and champion for the underdog always standing up for the less fortunate. In addition to his husband and mother, Toby is survived by his brothers Roy Lee Coley, Joseph Robert Coley, and sister Catherine Christine Coley. He is preceded by his brother William Christopher Coley. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations are requested to be made to your local animal shelter, humane society, or SPCA.

The growth of our service and the community's support led to our move in March 1963 to the current location—once St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, built in 1930. Our chapel, a cherished historic landmark within the storied Dilworth neighborhood, is renowned for being the only funeral home in Charlotte graced with its own chapel, echoing with decades of history and serenity....
