Hankins & Whittington Funeral Home
Joelle Kristy Smith
July 17th, 1966 - November 6th, 2021
Joelle Kristy (Skinner) Smith, 55, loving wife, mother, and spectacular human being, died peacefully at home on Friday, November 5, 2021 surrounded by family. Joelle fought breast cancer for two decades like a true warrior, providing a shining example to all those lucky enough to know her, of a life well lived. Born to Rose and David Skinner in Flint, MI, the sixth of seven children, Joelle made lasting friendships everywhere she lived. She moved with her family to Charlotte in 1984. She received her Bachelor’s degree in marketing from Winthrop University, and an Associate’s Degree in nursing from the Carolinas College of Healthcare Sciences. She worked as a surgical and transplant nurse for eight years at Carolinas Medical Center from 1991-1998. Joelle married the love of her life, Steve Smith on June 26, 1993. She put family above all else, making a loving home for sons Ben and Sam. Switching careers to match their schedule, Joelle taught pre-school at Myers Park Baptist Church for many years. She spent many happy hours in the bleachers, cheering on her sons’ athletic prowess on the basketball court. A passionate environmentalist and animal lover, Joelle provided a home for many rescue dogs. Over the years, she and Steve developed a love of travel, taking France by storm, and enjoying many other adventures, near and far. Joelle is survived by her husband, Steve, and sons Ben and Sam Smith, her parents Rose and David Skinner, siblings Joel (Carol) Skinner, Sandy (Rick) Gordy, Doug (Lili) Skinner, Sheryl Skinner, Shelly (Tim) Terlep, and Kristin Skinner, and many beloved aunts, uncles, in-laws, nieces and nephews. The world is undoubtedly a better place as a result of Joelle’s journey here on earth. Godspeed to her. The family will receive friends from 11:00AM until 12:45PM with a Celebration of Joelle's Life to begin at 1:00PM Saturday, November 20 at Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Boulevard Charlotte, NC 28203.
