Charles "Herb" Herbert Helms
July 1st, 1924 - December 4th, 2021
Charles Herbert “Herb” Helms, age 97, died Saturday, December 4, 2021, of natural causes surrounded by his devoted loving wife of 67 years and his family. Herb served in the U.S. Navy as a Storekeeper Third Class V6. He entered the Navy on October 29,1942 and was honorably discharged on February 6, 1946. Herb’s career was in TV and Appliances through RCA. He worked 40 years with Southern Radio Corporation in Charlotte, NC. Herb was known as “Pa-Paw” to his grandchilden and “G-Paw” to his great-grand children. Herb and his wife Ida were active members at St. Gabriel Catholic Church and St. Matthew Catholic Church. Herb and Ida were married December 23, 1954, at St. Gabriel by Father Frank O’Rourke. In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by 3 siblings: Walter Royce Helms, Jessica Helms Gary, Thomas Jerrold Helms, and his beloved son Pete Stutts. Herb is survived by his loving wife Ida Lockey Helms; daughter Joy Dahn Helms of Charlotte, NC; 5 grandchildren, Nicholas Stutts, Catherine Mahoney, Melissa Ricks, Bradley Stutts and Adam Stutts; 2 great grandchildren Margaret (Maggie) and Peter. A private graveside service was held at Sharon Memorial Park and officiated by Father Frank O’Rourke. A Memorial Service to honor Herb will be held at a future date to be announced. Contributions in Herb’s memory may be made to St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28211; St. Matthew Catholic Church, 8015 Ballantyne Commons Pkwy., Charlotte, NC 28277 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
