John Michael Spainhour, 78, of Charlotte, passed away October 3, 2022 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Walter Judson and Mary Elizabeth Jennings Spainhour. He was preceded in death by his brother, Walter Judson Spainhour, Jr. (“Jud”) and his sister Mary Jennings Spainhour Cooper. Mike is survived by his loving wife, Joan Moseley Spainhour, a stepson Stephen Todd Chappell, a daughter, Nancy Josephine Spainhour Grigsby and her husband, John Grigsby and a grandson, Michael Joseph Graf, III and many more loving family and friends. Mike was a graduate of North Carolina State University, School of Engineering, a retired Army officer, and a member of Special Forces and a veteran of the Viet Nam conflict and a lifelong pilot. He flew the OV1 Mohawk for the Georgia National Guard and during his career, Mike flew for Capitol Airways, Piedmont Airlines, US Airways and retired in 2004 from American Airlines. A private graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2022, in Lenoir under the direction of Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28203. Memorials on behalf of Mike may be made to Southminster Community Fund, Southminster, 8919 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210 or the Altzheimer’s Association, 4600 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28209.
