Alva Eugene (Gene) Warren, 82 of Charlotte, NC died on September 16, 2013. He was born on May 3, 1931, in Danville, Kentucky. He was the son of Dr. Casper Carl "Pop Pop" and Mary Strickland "Nana" Warren. He was preceded in death by his brother Carl and his sister Ginner Poe. The love of his life was his wife, Louise Lee Warren, with whom he was happily married for 59 years. Gene moved to Charlotte in 1943 when his father became the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Charlotte. He graduated from Central High School in 1949. Among his many activities, he enjoyed being the only male on the cheerleading squad following a basketball injury. Gene and Louise were married in 1954. He graduated from N.C. State University in 1955 with a degree in architectural design. He was a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force and flew F-102 interceptors. He was a partner of Wilber, Kendrick, Workman, and Warren architectural firm. Gene served as President of the Charlotte Jaycees, director of the Miss North Carolina pageant and chairman of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Park and Recreation Commission. He was an active member at FBC Charlotte where he was a deacon and loved teaching Sunday School. Following retirement he became the Assistant to the Pastor (Dr. Charles Page) in the area of evangelism. Gene had a passion for sharing Christ with anyone who would listen. Known for his constant smile and love for life, he had many friends and he loved playing golf and spending time with his family at Lake Norman. In addition to his wife, Louise, he is survived by his sons, Dan and his wife, Sylvia of Charlotte, NC, Jeff and his wife, Stacy of Dallas, Texas, and Kevin and his wife, Beth, of Charlotte, NC. The great joy of his life was his grandchildren, Blair and Mary Blake Warren, Whitney, Emily and Travis Warren, Taylor Warren and Reynolds and Ryan Myrick. The family is grateful for the loving care that he received at Cuthbertson Village Memory Support and Asbury Care Center at Aldersgate. A Celebration of Gene's life will take place at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Providence Baptist Church, 4921 Randolph Road, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:30 until 8:00 PM at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service and following the memorial service at the church on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Providence Baptist Church Children's Ministry, 4921 Randolph Rd, Charlotte, NC 28211 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
