Jack Downard
November 26th, 1920 - August 30th, 2012
Mr. Downard, age 91, passed away August 30, 2012. He was born on November 26, 1920, son of the late Catherine Cates and Jasper Downard of Louisville, Kentucky. Jack grew up in Louisville, Kentucky where he graduated from Male High School. He received a BS degree in Chemical Engineering in 1940 from the University of Louisville. Jack was a member of the Triangle Fraternity. During his career, Jack worked as a chemical engineer for Hercules Powder Company and Hoechst Celanese Corporation until his retirement in 1978. Jack was a member of the Spartanburg, SC Kiwanis Club where he served as the chapter president. He was a volunteer with the YMCA, Friendship Trays, and Habitat for Humanity. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Burlington, NJ and Spartanburg, SC and Saint John?s Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC. Jack loved sports and played tennis, golf, table tennis, and baseball. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his older brother William C. Downard, his first wife Frances Atkins Downard who died in 1990, and his second wife Beverly Bishop Downard who died in 1998. Jack is survived by his son, Doug Downard and wife Esther of Bangkok, Thailand, daughter Lida Boren and husband Hanes of Boone, NC, daughter Katie Brown and husband Bill of Charlotte, NC, grandchildren, Katie Downard of Aspen, CO, Christa Boren of St. Albans, UK, Ryland Boren of Denver, CO, Adam Brown of Denver, CO, Benjamin Brown of Wilmington, NC and Anna Brown Simpson of New York, NY, great grandchildren, Paxton Boren of Denver, CO, Isabel and Niamh Toner of St. Albans, UK, Caroline and Morgan Brown of Denver, CO, and Micah and Lucas Brown of Wilmington, NC. He is also survived by the children of Beverly Bishop Downard, David Downard of Santa Rosa, CA, Melanie Baichtal of Nampa, ID and Daphne Fisher of Lisbon, Portugal.
