"South Hadley, Rene E. Desjardins, 89, died on Tuesday, July 26 at the Soldiers' Home in Holyoke. Born in Richford, VT on January 8, 1922 he was the son of the late Sylvio and Marie (Savageau) Desjardins. He resided in San Francisco for many years before moving back to this area. He was a proud veteran serving in the Army during the Korean War. Rene was an extensive traveler and worked on the SS America cruise ship for many years as a barber. He also owned his own barber shop in San Francisco. In his retirement he was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #41 in Holyoke and volunteered at the homeless shelter. He will be sadly missed by his brother, Leo, with whom he lived, along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Roger, Oscar, Lucien, Ernest and sisters, Annette Lorte, Jean Dupre and Fernande Landry. Funeral services will be from Beers and Story South Hadley Funeral Home at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, August 1 followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:00 a.m. at St. Theresa's Church. Burial will follow in St. Rose DeLima Cemetery.
