Ira Marshall Harris ?Ike? Mr. Harris, 88, a Charlotte native died at White Oak Manor Nursing Home on Saturday, May 2, 2009. He was born December 12, 1920 son of the late Ira Z. and Carna Cagle Harris. Ike attended Central High School and was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of WW II and a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Harris was also a member of American Legion Post 262. One of Ike?s proudest accomplishments was the time he spent serving his country during two tours of duty in the Military and in addition he was one of the charter members of the local Air National Guard. After serving in the military, Ike returned home to be come partners in his father?s store, Harris Cash Grocery, located at the corner of Remount Rd and Toomey Ave. During his many years as proprietor of this neighbourhood store, Ike was endeared by both friends and new acquaintances he met on a daily basis. All can truly say, ?Ike never met a stranger.? In addition to his parents Mr. Harris was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Stafford; three brothers and two sisters. Surviving is his wife of 67 years, Mary K. Harris of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Marsha Shands and her husband, William of Acworth, GA; son-in-law; Paul Stafford of Matthews, NC and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral service for Mr. Harris will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 6, in the Dilworth Chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service. The family will receive friends at Hankins and Whittington Tuesday evening, May 5, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Ken Hastings, Bill Fish, Pete Toomey and his son-in-laws, Bill Shands and Paul Stafford.
