Richard Louis Doherty, Sr. ?Dick? Mr. Doherty, 90, a resident of The Haven of Carolina Place died Thursday, April 2, 2009. Dick Was born December 23, 1918 in Detroit, MI, son of the late Arthur and Irene Doherty. He was known for his love of music, an avid violin player and singer; he was active in numerous choirs. He was a US Navy veteran of WW II serving from 1944 to 1946. He began his career in manufacturing with Vickers in Detroit, MI and later with Lear Siegler. He moved to Charlotte in 1952 with his wife Barbara and retired from Lear Siegler in 1987 with over 30 years of service. Mr. Doherty was a founding member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church and was active in many ministries within the church. He was also an original member and past president of Pine Lake Country Club and was involved in many activities at the club, most notably the acquiring of the land planning and completion of the golf course. Dick was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Barbara. Survivors include his son, Richard L. Doherty, Jr. of Matthews, NC; daughters, Nancy S. Grey of Charlotte, NC and Patricia A. Hines and husband, Edward of Stallings, NC; brother, Alvin Doherty and his wife, Elaine of Boyton Beach, Fl; sister, Marion Young of Lupton, MI; grandchildren, Robert M. Doherty, Brandi Grey and Shawn Hines all of Charlotte, NC and four great grandchildren. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the entire staff at The Haven for their continued support and outstanding care an also to Jennifer Blake and Jill Harris of Hospice for their dedication and assistance in the final days of Richard?s life. A prayer service will be held Monday, April 6, at 7:00 PM at St. Gabriel?s Catholic Church with the family receiving friends following the service. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, April 7, at 1:00 PM at St. Gabriel?s Catholic Church with the Reverend Francis J. O?Rourke officiating. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to St. Gabriel?s Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Rd., Charlotte, NC 28211 or Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 E 7th St., Charlotte, NC 28204.
