Hugh Donald Hipps Mr. Hipps, 86, of Charlotte, died Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Grant Adult Care Home #2. He was born in Canton, NC, on October 26, 1922, son of the late Sewell and Susan Hipps. Mr. Hipps was a graduate of Wake Forest University and Peabody College, now known as Vanderbilt University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy before starting his career as a teacher and coach. Mr. Hipps taught at Garinger High School and East Mecklenburg High School. He coached wrestling and football where he lead the East Mecklenburg football team to win the division 4-A state championship. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hipps was preceded in death in May of 2008 by his loving wife, Martha; and also seven brothers and sisters. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Morris and her husband, J.T. of Charlotte; daughter-in-law, Elaine Harvey Weaver and her husband, Jack of Raleigh; grandchildren, Scott Harvey and wife, Angie of Georgia, Kevin Harvey and wife, Amy of Raleigh, Lauren Goodman and husband, Drew of Charlotte, David Morris of Charlotte, and Katie Morris of Charlotte; great-grandchildren, Nathan Harvey, Camden Harvey and Geneva Lee Goodman. A service to celebrate his life will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday March 31, 2009 at St. Johns Baptist Church, 300 Hawthorne Lane Charlotte, NC with Dr. Richard Kremer and Reverend Michael Cummings, Officiating. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service in the parlor at the church. Memorials may be made to St. John?s Baptist Church-Building Fund, 300 Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, NC 28204 or the Alzheimer?s Association-Western Carolina, 3800 Shamrock Drive Charlotte, NC 28215.
