Alan Arthur Lloyd Jr.

Alan Arthur Lloyd Jr, June 30, 1927 - July 4, 2021 Firstborn of Mary Alice (Havens) & Alan Arthur Lloyd Sr., he was the oldest of 10. Born in Denver and eventually moving to the family's 80-acre farm in Byers, Colorado, Alan learned many life lessons on the farm. Joining the Navy a few weeks after High School, he served in the Seabees during the end of WWII, staying stateside in California, working as a spotter for a crane operator. Alan was grateful for this opportunity because many of his buddies did not return from the South Pacific. After serving his country, he made his way to Portland, Oregon, where he met the love of his life, Ellen Stuwe. They were married in 1952 and spent the next 67 years together. They raised three kids, Patty, David & Margaret, in the Woodlawn neighborhood of NE Portland. Always hardworking, he retired after 40 years working for Sears as a warehouseman. Alan always loved the water and enjoyed boating, Sea Scouts, fishing, catching crawdads, and living in their houseboat on the Multnomah Channel, Sauvie Island, for 21 years. After retirement, Alan and Ellen moved to Ya-Po-Ah Terrace in Eugene. He got involved in the resident council, called bingo, drove the activity bus, and raised money by holding estate sales and recycling bottles and cans for a new bus and stove. With help and encouragement from a nephew, he became an entrepreneur and provided a shuttle service to drift boaters on the Mackenzie River. An avid cribbage player, he scored a 29 hand (the highest score you can get) in tournament play. At age 80, he commemorated the occasion with a new tattoo of that winning hand and had his other "Navy" tattoos touched up. The travel bug took them to Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, The Panama Canal, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, and Florida. Alan never met a stranger and would always lend a helping hand to those in need. The Lloyds all have a great sense of humor and love a good joke. Alan would spread joy and laughter no matter where he went with his jokes, whether told or in print. "Did you hear they found bones on the moon? The cow didn't make it". Dad celebrated his 94th birthday with family at his home at The Forum at Town Center Village. Four days later, he joined Ellen in heaven. The family held a celebration of life on May 21, 2022, in Corbet, Oregon. Their ashes were blended amid a field of wildflowers at Rowena Crest, during a sunset ceremony, overlooking the Columbia River. May 24th would have been their 70th wedding anniversary.
