Miss "Winnie" Winifred Margaret Zeman
November 3rd, 1927 - November 18th, 2016
Winifred "Winnie" Margaret Zeman passed away suddenly on Friday, November 18, 2016 at CMC Mercy Hospital after a short illness. She was the daughter of the late Margaret Frances (nee: Burns) Zeman and Joseph Francis Zeman. Winnie was the youngest of nine siblings, all of whom predeceased her: Mary, Margaret, Joe, Libby, Henry, Burns, Paul, and Jean. Winnie's elementary education was conducted at O'Donahue School and she graduated from Central High School in Charlotte. Her entire working career was spent with First Citizens Bank, from which she retired. Winnie was a lifetime member of St. Patrick's Cathedral. During her younger years she was active with women's business groups in Charlotte and church clubs and activities at St. Patrick's. Winnie followed celebrities visiting our city, collecting autographs and pictures of them which she compiled in albums. She also served as historian for the Zeman family writing a 310 page family tree book, as well as four books documenting stories of their lives together. These stories covered happy, youthful memories of the family life together through the hardship of her brother, Paul's World War II POW experiences. In Winnie's own words their favorite youthful story was… "Brother Paul was putting the TV antenna on the roof of the house. He called in for help from me in the house. He asked if I could climb down the ladder holding on with one hand…? Why? I looked up and saw our dog, Pug had climbed up the ladder on to the roof with Paul but couldn't climb down! And you know I came through …Mission accomplished!" "Mama and Daddy---Thanks for the memories!" Winnie was well loved and is survived by numerous nieces and nephews to whom she was always very special. She asked that memorials be made to St. Patrick's Cathedral, 1621 Dilworth Road East, Charlotte, NC 28203. Following her wishes, there will be a private grave side service and a memorial mass that will be held at a later date at St. Patrick's Cathedral.
