Elaine Anderson, 89, died September 13, 2016 at The Pavilion at Brightmore in Charlotte, NC. She was born December 26, 1926 in Galesville, WI. Elaine graduated from Galesville High School in 1944. Shortly after graduation she moved to Washington DC at the US Civilian Casualty Department. Elaine left Washington DC at the end of World War II and returned to Galesville. There, Elaine worked at the Gilbertson Myers Dry Goods store until June of 1949. In June of 1949 Elaine joined the US Army (Women's Army Corps.) She did her basic training at Fort Lee Virginia and then attended military finance school in St. Louis. She then served at Bremerhaven, Germany during the Korean War, working in payroll and finance. Elaine was discharged from WAC in October of 1952. Following her 3 year WAC enlistment, Elaine located in Madison, WI and attended the Madison Business School and worked for a Certified Public Accountant. In 1955, she moved to Charlotte, NC and went to work for Pelton Crane Company, retiring in March of 1990. During her long career with Pelton Crane, Elaine was also active in the Military Reserves and The American Legion. She served as Commander of The Women's Legion Post, attending state and national meetings and organizing Veteran's Day celebrations for the Women's Legion. Elaine enjoyed traveling, visiting throughout the United States as well as Australia, Scandinavia, England and Germany. She also enjoyed her many good friends including special friends, Vonnie Cason, Dorothy Underwood and the late Patty Walker. She was a long time member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. The prayers and visits from Pastor Leo Markwat were greatly appreciated. The family would also like to express their appreciation to the staff of Atria Merrywood, Home Instead Home Care Services, The Pavilion at Brightmore, and Hospice and Palliative Charlotte Region for their compassionate care and concern. Elaine is survived by her sister, Rita (Jon) Swenson of Westfield, WI; brother-in-law, Harry Hank of Lake Charles, LA and sister-in-law, Monica Anderson of Lacrosse, WI; as well as nieces and their families, Tara (Jim) Gerber and Emily; Tori Lyle and Ryan and Rachel, Judy Anderson, Carol Oller and Ben; nephews and their families, Perry (Jean) Anderson and Troy, Chad and Amanda; Derek (Janet) Weatherbee; Craig (Ann) Swenson and Hailey and Ainsley; Brad (Amy) Swenson and Rachel, Tyler and Zachery; and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Delia Anderson; Brothers, Howard, Albert, Mark, and sisters, Nancy Hank and Wanda Anderson. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, October 1, 2016 in the chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Charlotte Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service.
