"Sean Sutton of South Hadley passed away on February 12, 2018 after a protracted illness. He had retired from a Professorship of Physics at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA., a position he had occupied since 1987. Prior to moving to Mount Holyoke, he had been an Assistant Professor of Physics at Smith College (1982 – 1987). He took his training (B.S., M.S. and PhD., 1982) at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. He taught courses in Mechanics, Electricity, Magnetism, Optics, Electronics, Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Experimental Techniques, and Astronomy. His research centered on Underground Particle Physics and Astrophysics, Neutrionoless Double Beta Decay at sites in Osburn, Idaho, and the Frejus Underground Laboratory, France. Sean published extensively in his field of inquiry and was the recipient of numerous governmental and foundation grants. He also was awarded many fellowships and honors in both physics and engineering. He was an avid oarsman and sculler, rowing for the Heavyweight Varsity Crew at the University of Pennsylvania and Vesper Boat Club in Philaddelphia. He was medalist in the Open USA National Heavyweight Division and won the Masters National Championship repeatedly. He is survived by his brothers, Peter C and Philip J. Sutton, and his sister, Elizabeth R. Sutton Stoll, and five nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church in South Hadley on May 5 at 3pm."
