John "Jack" Samuel Fitch
March 9th, 1924 - September 10th, 2014
Mr. Fitch passed away peacefully on September 10, 2014 at the Carriage Club. He was born on March 9, 1924, in Etna, Pa to the late John & Olive Fitch. He received a football scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1942. He served 2 years in the Navy and then returned to school and graduated in 1948. During his years at Carolina, he was a 4 sport letterman in football, basketball, baseball & track. After graduation, he played football professionally for the Baltimore Colts and the Pittsburg Steelers. Jack married Mary Jane Lloyd in 1949 and they moved to Charlotte, where he began his career with the New York Life Insurance Co. He worked as an agent for 60 years and earned the distinction of being a Lifetime Member of the Million Dollar Round Table. He enjoyed playing and coaching basketball at the Morehead (Dowd) YMCA and loved his Friday golf groups at Carmel Country Club. His true passion was his family. He loved to watch his children and grandchildren participate in sports and other activities. He rarely missed an event. Jack was predeceased by his wife, Mary Jane in 2001. He is survived by his 4 children; Janet Myers and husband, Dennis, Patty Matthews and husband, Chris, Carol Crigler and husband, B and John Fitch, Jr. and wife, Beth. Jack had 13 grandchildren; Michele Reich and husband, Allan, Peyton Gehron and husband, Jake, Dennis Myers, IV., Jack Myers, Christy Norton and husband, Joe, Kelly Peisel and husband, Brad, Hunter Matthews, Phillip Crigler and wife, Gen, Kevin Crigler and wife, Kelli, Hannah Crigler, Jay Fitch, Will Fitch and Ali Fitch all of Charlotte. In addition, he had 8 great-grandchildren. Jack is also survived by his sister, Thelma Zeiner of Etna, Pa. and his loving companion, Beckie Spaugh. The family would like to thank the staff at The Carriage Club for their care and support of Jack over the past 7 years. A service to celebrate his life will be held at Myers Park Baptist Church on Monday, September 15, 2014 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends in Heaton Hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Kindermourn,1320 Harding Place, Charlotte, NC 28204.
