Gilbert Ramos Vega
December 26th, 1929 - April 3rd, 2020
In loving memory of Gilbert Ramos Vega Gilbert Ramos Vega, age 90, of Pensacola, Florida, went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 3, 2020. He was born in San Antonio, Texas, on December 26, 1929 to Ramona Vega and Joe Z. Vega. As we reflect on his life one thing that he will always be remembered for is his loyal servants heart. Gil was born to serve, as evidenced by the 30 years he spent in the U.S. Air Force, and another 30 years working for the Civil Service. He also served as Fire Chief in Pensacola. He was dedicated to his family, country, fellow man, neighbor, and God. He was blessed to have spent 52 years building a life with his 1st wife, Margaret, who was the love of his life until her passing. His 2nd wife, Dorothea, and he were married 23 years who also predeceased Gil. Gil’s military background drew him to others who served in the Armed Forces. In the mold of the structured life the military had instilled in them, Gil and his Veteran friends gathered, always at 2:45 PM, at a rotating collection of restaurants such as Golden Corral, Denny’s, Sonny’s BBQ, and Po’ Folks. It was there he shared and expanded friendships with those who had experienced life similar to what he had lived. But he also enjoyed the routine of the same familiar smiling faces that served him. Gil was kind and compassionate and despite that rigid front that 30 years in the military taught him to exhibit, his kind-hearted spirit was evident to those who knew him. He loved traveling and visiting relatives in Texas and often told stories of his time there. He loved reading his Bible. It was one of his favorite past times. I’m sure he prayed many prayers for his country, his family and his friends during the course of his life and as he left this world and went to be with Jesus, I’m sure he heard the words “Well done thy good and faithful servant”. Welcome home. Gilbert was predeceased by: Mother, Ramon Ramos Vega, Father: Joe Z. Vega, Siblings: Joe Enrique Vega, Carlos Vega, Olga Vega, Robert Vega, Diana Vega, Children: Ramona Vega, Dorothy Vega and Gil Vega Jr. Surviving Relatives: Siblings Gloria Mitchell, Richard Vega, Marvin Vega, Shirley Vega Fischer, Nadine Vega Aldridge, Arlene Vega Barcenes and Steve Vega; Surviving children: Amanda Vega Young, Adrian Vega, Dana Lukkar, Shannon Cabanos-Whiddon; great neice/caregiver: Stephanie Howell Maroney, loving grandchildren and great grands. A Soldiers Prayer Lord, I ask for courage to face and conquer my own fears. Grant me courage to take me where others will not go. I ask for strength of body to protect others and strength of spirit to lead others. I ask for dedication to my job and to do it well and dedication to my country, to keep it safe. Give me Lord, concern for those who trust me, and compassion for those who need me. And please Lord, through it all be by my side,
