Robert Samuel McWhorter
January 31st, 1934 - August 11th, 2021
Robert Samuel “Bob” McWhorter passed away August 11, 2021, in Columbia, SC into the presence of His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Born in Washington, PA on January 31, 1934, he was the son of the late Alonzo and Alice Dorothy Johnston McWhorter. Bob lived in Germany as he served a tour in the US Army. After his years in the Army, he graduated from Washington & Jefferson University. He then married Margery Ewart McWhorter, December 8, 1956. He taught in North Franklin School District in Washington, PA. That was followed by a long career with IBM, which brought them to Columbia, SC. After retiring from IBM, he continued work with Policy Management System. Life was an adventure for Bob. He loved God’s creation, his country (and beyond) and the people God brought into his life. He and Margie traveled widely, across the states, Hawaii, Alaska, Europe and the British Isles. His yard at home and his backyard garden were always busy projects for him. His greatest delight was in his Lord, his wife, family and treasured friends. Bob was a valuable mentor to many. A men’s retreat led to weekly meetings at Lizard’s Thicket, which gradually grew to include wives. He was a constant, faithful mentor and encourager, from the door of the church to his back yard with whoever came his way. His desire was to always live in the love and grace he had received from God and to share that with all. Bob was a longtime active member and Elder of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church. Bob is predeceased by his parents; infant son, Todd Ewart McWhorter; and sister, Dorothy Riggle. Surviving him are his wife, Margie; sons, Neil McWhorter (Kelly) of York, SC, and LTC Kent McWhorter (Dianna) of Columbia, SC; beloved granddaughter, Eithne McWhorter of Columbia; sister, Barbara Gotwalt of State College, PA; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service for Bob will be held August 15, 2021 at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC at 3:00 pm with visitation at the church following the service. The service will be live-streamed through YouTube at the link, cornerstonesc. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, 5637 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212. South Carolina Cremation Society of West Columbia is assisting the family. Family and friends may sign the online tribute wall at www.southcarolinacremation.com
