Michael John Oberly
February 23rd, 1947 - August 28th, 2022
Granby—Michael John Oberly, 75, passed away at home on Sunday, August 28, 2022. Son of the late Michael and Clare (Baron) Oberly, he was born in Holyoke on February 23, 1947. After completing his education, Michael went on to proudly serve his country in the United States’ Army during the Korean Conflict. Michael was the Chief Engineer on a fishing boat, a 100 foot tender, docked in Resurrection Bay in Seward, Alaska. They fished waters from Seattle to Prince William Sound to Chignik, which is a small town 200 miles from Kodiak Island on the Aleution Chain. They fished for scallop, tanner crab, herring and Salmon. He was in Seward for three years. He worked several other jobs over the years and eventually retired from Arnolds Meats as a meat cutter. Michael loved to travel. He enjoyed playing, watching and coaching basketball and baseball. He loved reading, music, history and antiques. He so loved playing, teaching and listening to his 7 year old granddaughter, Harper. Michael will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him, including his wife of 52 years, Gail (Berneck) Oberly, his son, Michael Oberly, his sister-in-law, Cara Berneck and his granddaughter, Harper Clare Oberly. Michael is survived by a brother Paul Oberly and his wife, Christine of Sunderland, a sister, Mary Oberly and her husband, David Kolkebek of Vermont, a nephew Sean Oberly and his wife, Bethany of Nantucket and niece, Heather Rigg of New York. He also has several grand nieces, Cate, Clare and Ellen Oberly and a grand nephew, John Oberly, all of Nantucket. Services for Michael were private. Per his request he was cremated and his wishes as to where his ashes were to be scattered, were followed. Donations can be made to the organization of your choice.
