Betty Pearson Pavone was born on February 22, 1951, at Freeman Hospital in Washington, DC. She was the fourth child of the late Mary Pearson and Solomon Lightfoot Hicks. She was also known as Maxzine in elementary school. She departed this life on July 17, 2017. Betty was educated in the Fairfax and Arlington County School systems. She graduated from George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church, Virginia in 1970. In high school, she loved all sports, especially baseball and softball just like everyone who grew up in Dunn Loring. Betty and her three older sons were baptized together at the Church of Latter Day Saints in June 1986. Betty attended Peace Baptist Church in Dunn Loring, Virginia for many years. She finally joined the church on Easter Sunday in 2010, under the leadership of Pastor Anthony Holland. Betty started working when she was 14 years old. She went to school in the day time and cleaned office buildings at night. Additionally, she worked in the library before and after school at Marshall High School. Betty started working for the United States Postal Service in September of 1969 at the age 17, delivering special delivery letters. Betty was the first black and first female special delivery driver for Vienna, Virginia Postal Service. She retired in 2004, after 30 plus years of service. She is the Author of “I’ve Got Something to Tell You, But Don’t Take It Personally”, which was published in 2007. She opened up a home based day care center until she was forced to close it at a days notice in 2016 due to her illness. My, she always loved all her children. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Michael Pavone in 2004; her mother and father Mary Pearson and Solomon Hicks, brothers Michael Pearson and Solomon Hicks. Betty leaves to cherish her memories: 4 sons, Floyd Haight (Bianca), David Haight (Vidalia), and Christian Haight (Kathy) and Anthony Pavone; 7 grandchildren David Haight Jr., Christian Williams, Kayla Haight, Christine Haight, Makaia Haight, Floyd Haight III and Drake Haight; one sister, Alice “Cookie” Hicks; 4 brothers, Harold Pearson (Inez), Edward Pearson, Dallas and John Hicks; special nieces Sonia and Sarah Hicks; special nephews Lloyd Hicks, Richard Pearson, and Adonis Hicks; very special friends, Reverend Nellina and Rev. Peter Coley, Adonis Smith, Uncle Robert Pearson; beloved friend Edward Baskerville; friends Robert Jackson, Nancy Thai, and Sal Maggio, and a host of other relatives. She was a mother to many including 18 boys whom she helped raise along with 66 day care children. Homegoing service will be held at 11am on Friday, July 21, 2017 at Peace Baptist Church located at 8221 Wolftrap Road, Vienna, Va. 22182. Viewing and family visitation will be held at 10am on Friday, July 21, 2017 at Peace Baptist Church.
