Darrell Newton
July 23rd, 1943 - March 2nd, 2022
TribuCast Rodney Darrell Newton, 78, of Swepsonville, NC, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 2, 2022. A native of Swepsonville, NC, Darrell was the husband of 57 years to Joyce Johnson Newton and the son of Robert L. “Red” Newton and Alma Faucette Newton, both deceased. Darrell was the owner/operator of Newton’s Fire & Safety, Swepsonville, NC. Retired Chief Darrell Newton started his fire service career in 1959 with the Swepsonville Fire Department and began his tenure as chief in 1968 until he semi-retired as Fire Chief in 2004. Retired Chief Newton was still actively involved within the organization. He served within the fire department; including Fire Chief, Board of Director, Treasurer, Secretary, but mostly the man that everyone looked up to and went to for just the right answer. Along with serving his community as a firefighter, Retired Chief Newton was a previous Town Councilman for the Town of Swepsonville and was still involved in the community that he so loved. Survivors include his wife, Joyce; two sons, Seth Newton and wife, Angie, and Philip Newton; five grandchildren, Colton Newton, Brooke Newton, Meredith Newton, Caroline Newton, and Luke Newton; and sister, Phyllis Gumm. In addition to his parents, Darrell was preceded in death by his sister, Sandra Herring. The family will greet friends from 5:00PM to 8:00PM Saturday, March 5, 2022 at the Swepsonville Fire Department. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held 2:00PM Sunday, March 6, 2022 at Bethel Baptist Church, 238 Dixon Road, Graham, NC 27253 with Rev. John Shields officiating. Interment will follow at the Phillips Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
