William "Bill" Idol
August 13th, 1930 - January 15th, 2017
William R. “Bill” Idol, 86, passed away January 15, 2017 at Hospice of the Piedmont in High Point. He was a resident of Brookdale Skeet Club for the past year. Funeral services celebrating his life will be 11:00AM Friday January 20, 2017 at Sandy Ridge United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Donna Friddle. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Bill was born in Guilford County August 13, 1930 to the late Rachel Emily Anderson Idol and Clyde Gustavius Idol. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Clyde Gustavius Idol, Jr. and Daniel Grady Idol. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 63 years Rebecca “Becky” Gray Idol; son Charles Reid Idol; sisters Irene Stack, Lois Hedgecock, and Virginia Nuckles; brother Bruce Lee Idol and numerous nieces and nephews, whom he loved very much. Bill grew up on a rural farm in Guilford County. He graduated from Colfax High School. Following school, he served his country honorably in the US Navy, serving aboard an aircraft carrier during the Korean War. Bill married his childhood sweetheart, Becky Gray, on December 18, 1953. They met when Bill’s father went to see a cow that Becky’s father had for sale. From that time on a love story began and continued throughout their years together. He worked in the Clerk’s Office for the City of Greensboro for many years before going to work at the US District Court, Middle District of North Carolina in 1968. He retired in 1992. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00PM Thursday at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Home in Kernersville. Memorial donations in his honor may be made to Sandy Ridge UMC, 2223 Sandy Ridge Rd, High Point, NC 27265.
