Shirley Ruth Disbrow Doren, 90, passed away peacefully with her son and daughter by her side on August 15th, 2019, in Denver, Co. Born on January 6th, 1929 in Pueblo, Colorado, the youngest daughter of Roy T Disbrow and Sylvia Rakestraw Disbrow. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Helen Bard, Lois DiIorio, Dee Phelps, special cousin Marjorie McDowell and her late husband Kenneth L Doren. Shirley spent her early years in Pueblo, attending school and entering the workforce as a pharmacy assistant at Prairie Drug where she met her future pharmacist husband, Kenny Doren. A job transfer for Kenny moved the family to Colorado Springs where they settled to raise their two children. Shirley treasured her home state of Colorado, taking advantage of the beauty of the changing seasons by spending time in the outdoors, hosting picnics and barbecues, enjoying mountain drives, peaceful walks in the Garden of the Gods, and traveling in their RV around the state with friends and family. An avid reader, enthusiastic progressive rummy player, and dog lover. Shirley’s real and abiding passions were her family and friends. This was evident by her invitations to family members to join in on family vacations which left them all with enduring memories full of laughter, willingness to whip up dozens of her famous tacos on a whim for her son and his friends, taking on the coordination of her daughters Girl Scout troop cookie drive which filled the entire basement rec room with towers of cookie boxes, arranging time for memorable get-togethers’ with her sisters and many friends. Additionally, hosting nieces and nephews for summer visits while dealing with their many shenanigans with patience and humor, spending time with her grandchildren, happily open to whatever activity they chose, even if it meant navigating through a dark rotating tunnel in a haunted house at the state fair. Shirley’s kindness, generosity, patience, and humor have been the focus of the memories friends and family have shared in her memory during the last few weeks. These shared memories are a testament to a life well lived and a woman well-loved. Shirley is survived by her daughter, Debbie (John) Pousson of Littleton, CO, son, Nick Doren of Colorado Springs, CO, grandchildren, Trevor (Maura) Pousson of San Francisco, CA, Tyler Pousson of San Francisco, CA, Jesse (Emily) Doren of Buffalo, NY, Katie (Jordi) Mayo of Castle Rock, CO, Clint (Mackenzie) Doren of Colorado Springs, CO, Casey (Shie) Doren of Boulder City, NV, great-grandchildren, Elliott and Lucy Doren, Haken and River Mayo, and Marlow Pousson, and many nieces and nephews. A private memorial will be done in the Fall in an area that was special to Shirley. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Best Friends Animal Society.
