Ida Ann Michels
May 18th, 1934 - July 13th, 2014
Ida Ann Michels passed away in her sleep in Clearwater on July 13, 2014. She was 80. Born in Buffalo, NY to Sylvia and Jacob Swartz, she attended Case Western Reserve University and then Ohio State University where she earned her degree and met the love of her life and soul mate, Stanley Michels, with whom she spent the next nearly 60 years. Ida was a remarkable and determined woman who relentlessly advocated for those less fortunate than herself . She worked as a speech pathologist near Ybor City in Tampa. She eventually founded the speech and hearing clinic at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater. She won the prestigious Bilgore Award for efforts to improve the community beyond her workplace. Ida and Stan also raised 2 children. After a successful career spanning over 25 years, she went back to school to obtain a master's degree. In retirement, she worked as a consultant and crisis intervention counselor. Ida loved her family and friends and remained close to those she met in her first years in Clearwater until her last day. Ida enjoyed cooking, sailing, playing the piano and entertaining friends with her beloved Stanley. She loved attending plays and traveling with dear friends. She was close to the Jewish Community from her earliest years at Temple B'nai Israel and was instrumental in seeing that temple community grow. More recently, she and her late husband served on the Board of Menorah Manor and they were both proud of the organization they helped nurture. Ida was most proud of her children and grandchildren and enjoyed the company of all shortly before her passing. Ida is survived by her loving sons and their wives, Mark and Lyn of North Palm Beach and Jonathan and Leticia of Palos Verdes Estates, grandchildren Katelyn and Austin of North Palm Beach and Ana and Simone of Palos Verdes Estates, her brother Stan and Joan Swartz of Boca Raton, sister in law Joan Kramer and Chuck Weir of Sun City Center, as well as many nieces and nephews she loved so dearly and talked of often. She is predeceased by her husband Stanley. A celebration of her life will be held at the Inn on the Pond in Countryside (2010 Greenbriar Blvd., Clearwater 33763) at 11AM Thursday. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Menorah Manor. David C. Gross Funeral Homes, Belcher Road Chapel in Clearwater is serving the family. Service Information
