Leonard Mauer
September 17th, 1930 - April 8th, 2014
Leonard 'Lenny' Mauer, age 83, of Treasure Island passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 8, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. Lenny was born September 17, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York to Jacob and Basia Mauer. He was preceded in death by his brother Irving Mauer and his sister Constance Lazarus. Lenny had an ear for learning foreign languages which began with his love of opera. This aptitude led to his service in Army Intelligence during the Korean Conflict. Lenny attended the Philadelphia Textile Institute where he graduated in 1951. After a career as a Textile Engineer at Service Knitting Mills in New York, Lenny and Ruth, his wife of 58 years moved, to Florida. Lenny had a deep love and pride in family and was known for his gentle heart. A current member of Congregation B'nai Israel, Lenny was a former long-time member of Young Israel of West Hempstead, New York; a board member of the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County; and a strong Zionist with a commitment to the development and sustainability of the State of Israel. Lenny had a deep passion for Biblical archeology. A true gentlemen and Mensch (man of integrity), Lenny will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his beloved wife Ruth; three daughters: Rabbi Sue Morningstar (Howie), Debby Gaines (Mark), and Liz Sembler (Greg); and six grandchildren: Dr. Aja Morningstar (Chris Chaim Cooper), Jonah Morningstar, Jacob Sembler, Ezra Sembler, Eve Sembler, and Ben Sembler. Funeral services will be 11 AM Thursday, April 10, 2014 at Congregation B'nai Israel, 300 58th Street North, St. Petersburg. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Park, Largo. Donations in his memory would be appreciated to Congregation B'nai Israel or the Jewish National Fund.
