Nelson V. Shirkey, 77, of Clearwater, passed away October 7, 2013. Nelson was born in Schenectady, NY to Richard and Margaret Shirkey and spent his youth in South Florida. He served in the US Army during the Korean War as a demolitions expert. Following his service in the Army, he worked for over 40 years at Honeywell as an engineering technician, and a production supervisor. He was a competitive softball player, coach, avid sports fan, poker player and a lover of all slot machines! He is survived by his wife Dorothy, children Jim, Debbie, David, Duane, Denise, and 7 grandchildren, Sean, Samantha, Matt, Allie, Zach, Katie, and Jamie as well as brothers Jim and Rick, and friend Barbara. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 10th from 5-7 PM at the David C. Gross Funeral Home, 830 N. Belcher Road in Clearwater. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, October 11th, 10 AM at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church 1955 S. Belcher Road, Clearwater. Interment will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Family will receive friends to celebrate Nelson's life at the Minnreg Building near Honeywell following the burial service at 6340 126th Ave. Largo, FL. Feel free to bring your favorite sports team attire to wear for the celebration of life at the Minn-Reg building. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Nelson's memory to USF Byrd Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center, 12901 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., MDC70, Tampa, FL 33612 or Suncoast Hospice, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd., Clearwater, FL 33760. David C. Gross Funeral Homes, Belcher Road Chapel in Clearwater is serving the family.
