Samuel M Showel, age 87, a 24 year resident of Las Vegas, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013. Sam was born May 30, 1925 in Chicago IL to the late Max and the late Sadie (Balzak) Showel. Sam served in the 5th Marine Division during World War II, worked alongside the Wind Talkers, fought at Iwo Jima and witnessed the flag raising at Mt. Suribachi. Sam was a graduate of Roosevelt University. He worked as an accountant for the State of IL. After retirement and moving to Las Vegas, Sam continued an active life. He was a founding member of the Jewish Community Center, A member and officer of the Jewish Genealogy Society of So. NV, treasurer of the Beth Sholom Men's Club, Quarter Master and long time member of Jewish War Veterans Post 21, member of the Marine League and a member of the Fossil and Rock Art Society. Sam is survived by his wife of 63 years, Charlotte Showel; children Marcy Stevens (Roger) of Coco Beach FL and Bruce (Denise) Showel of Cannon Falls MN; grandchildren Philip Showel and Rachel Midtovne (Michael); and great grandchildren Liam and Bryn Midtovne. A funeral service will be held on April 10, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. at the Veteran's Cemetery in Boulder City NV.
