Speedy Benson joined his Father in Heaven on September 1st 2017. Speedy was born in St. Petersburg on July 4th, 1959 to Arnold and Alice Benson. After graduating from Lakewood High School in 1979, he went to serve his country as a U.S Army MP. After 4 years in the military, he left and started work building the trusses on the skyway bridge. Speedy then started his career in landscape, where he met his best friend, Jim Kotsopoulos. Jim hired Speedy as a landscape manager for Excel Hospitality Inc in 1989, where he worked until his death. Speedy touched the lives of everyone he met with his kind, loving and free-spirited ways. He enjoyed watching the Packers on Sunday, listening to his favorite band, Black Sabbath, and spoiling his pride and joy, his dogs. Speedy was the middle child out of five, who all considered him their fun loving and tough brother. He is survived by his brothers, Alan E. Benson, Alvin (Delores) Benson; sister, Arleen Benson Nunez; nephews and nieces, Chad Benson, Kim Benson-Fuger (Dylan Fuger), Kevin, Andrew and Patrick Nunez, Michel Benson, Michelle Benson, Mathew Benson and Mellissa (Rick) McNary; great-nieces and nephews, Marianne Fuger, Parker Fuger, Rowan Nunez and Francis Nunez. Speedy was predeceased by his parents, Arnold and Alice Benson; oldest sister, Annetta Benson; and grandparents Andy and Mable Benson & Paul and Marian Sprik. A gathering will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at the David C. Gross Funeral Home in St. Petersburg, where services will begin at 3 PM. Afterwards, please join the family in a Celebration of Life in the Presidential Ballroom on the Penthouse Level of the Grand Plaza Hotel, 5250 Gulf Blvd, St Pete Beach, FL 33706.
