Howard Paul Hoffman
May 22nd, 1927 - March 22nd, 2017
HOWARD HOFFMAN Howard Hoffman, 89, of Las Vegas, by way of New York and Florida, passed away March 22, 2017. Born May 22, 1927, in Brooklyn, N.Y., Howard grew up there until enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Preparing for the invasion of Japan as part of the massive naval task force, President Truman cancelled it by launching the Atomic Age. Howard became part of the Military Occupation of Japan and witnessed the Surrender aboard the USS Missouri. After the war, Howard attended George Washington University on a basketball scholarship, a sport he loved. He graduated with a degree in Business and Government. Throughout a very successful business career which took him around the globe, Howard was recognized in many articles including Forbes and Esquire Magazine for his mastery in commercial real estate and later became a partner at Lehman Brothers. He returned to the world of higher education first as a member of the Boards of Trustees at Florida Atlantic University and a founder at the Einstein College of Medicine. He joined the George Washington University Board of Trustees in 1982 and served as Trustee Emeritus until his passing. With a passion for entrepreneurial careers, Howard founded the Howard Hoffman Distinguished Lecture Series at George Washington University to encourage students to pursue careers as he did. Howard was one of those rare individuals, shaped by the "Greatest Generation" who loved his country, his family and hundreds of friends he met over his lifetime. Anyone who knew Howie over the years or simply in passing would find his charisma, excitement and outlook on life contagious. A true gentleman through and through. He is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca; his six children, Betsy, Ted, Scott, Erika, Jamie and Jason; and by his seven grandchildren, Matthew, Christopher, Seth, Mackenzie, Ian, Emily and Noelle. Memorial service is pending. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in the name of the "Howard Hoffman Distinguished Lecture Series" through George Washington University.
