Mary Ellen Humble
June 18th, 1931 - April 25th, 2023
Mary Ellen Humble (1931-2023) Mary Ellen Humble, a devoted wife, mother and friend, passed away April 25, 2023, in Beaverton. She was born in St. Helens, OR June 18, 1931. She was married for 71 years to Charles “Chuck” Humble Jr. who preceded her in death on Oct. 20, 2020. Mary had seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was the youngest of two children born to Lela and John Thurman who moved from Arkansas to St. Helens before her birth. A sister, Maxine of Shingletown, CA, preceded her in death. She graduated from St. Helens High School in 1949 and married Chuck at Christ Episcopal Church in St. Helens. Their first to two children, Charles and Margie, were born while Chuck was attending Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University) in Monmouth, OR. They moved to Myrtle Point, OR after his graduation from OCE where Chuck began his teaching career as a junior high teacher and coach. Sons Halary and Jason were born during their time in Myrtle Point. Halary passed away in 1990 in Portland, OR. They lived 25 years in Myrtle Point where they had many friends and were both active in church and community activities. They were founding members of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where they regularly attended services and participated in church leadership. While in Myrtle Point, Mary worked as a school librarian and volunteered for the church altar guild, the American Red Cross Bloodmobile and Cub Scouts. She was an accomplished cook and creative homemaker. She enjoyed refinishing antique furniture, cooking and baking and various artistic pursuits including tole painting and sewing Christmas stockings for the annual church bazaar. Mary, Chuck and Jason moved to Beaverton in 1977 where Chuck worked for The Oregonian Employees Federal Credit Union. They later spent time in Tillamook and Portland where Mary worked as a waitress and a cook for the Portland Public Schools. After moving back to Beaverton, they managed an apartment complex until their retirement. Mary was a loving wife and mother who was devoted to her family and many close friends. She remained close to many of her classmates at St. Helens High School over the years. She loved family gatherings and especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and Chuck were attendees and members of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Beaverton for 35 years. A memorial service was held for both Mary and Chuck July 8, 2023, at The Episcopal Parish of St. John The Baptist in Portland. They there were interred in the St. Bartholomew’s memorial garden July 9, 2023. Contributions in Mary Ellen and Charles names can be given to Dornbecher Children’s Hospital
