Beckman-Williamson Funeral Homes & Crematory - Cocoa Beach
Richard Joseph Savard
December 2nd, 1950 - August 9th, 2020
He was the son of Eileen and Dick Savard. And he has now joined them in Spirit. He was brother to Gene, Linda, Rosemary, Michael, Ann, Susan, and Les. And he has now joined Linda, Michael, and Les in Spirit. He leaves behind Gene, Rosemary, Ann, and Susan. As well as other family members that although he was not an overly demonstrative man, I know that he loved them. It was a special joy when he said “I love you.” He was husband to Mig, and he has now joined her in Spirit. He leaves behind his step-son and daughter, David and Michelle. He was a friend to many including those he knew since he was a little boy running the Lauraville streets around Montebello Terrace. Just as strongly, he was a friend to those he met as an adult. I know that he would not want his friends to mourn but rather would wish them to lift a pint of beer, a glass of wine, or a shot of whiskey to the memories they hold of him. Once A Marine, Always A Marine. And to all of his Marine buddies I think he would say SEMPER FI. He did not talk much about his military service but when he did it was clear that he had made friendships in the Corps that he valued as an integral part of who he was as a man. He so greatly enjoyed the reunions you all had. One of the last stories he told me, his sister Susan, was just a few months ago about a letter he got from his Sargent after not hearing from him for a while. And how Sarge saved his life at least twice in Vietnam and how he felt that this letter saved him a 3rd time. And yes. He served in the Vietnam War. He volunteered; he did not wait to be drafted because that was the kind of man he was. To you his “marine buddies” (that is how he always referred to you): “Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway. “(John Wayne) He loved football and even in heaven is probably still upset about the Colts sneaking out of Baltimore in the dead of night. In a weird way he would get a kick out of the fact that both he and Johnny U died at the age of 69 and both because of their heart. Yep, I can see him grinning with a glint in his eye about that. As a final note I found this quote from Winston Churchill and thought it was apropos to the spirit of my brother……. “I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter.”
