I Thessalonians 4:13-18 Duffield, VA - Phillip Roy Smith passed away on February 9, 2019 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Kingsport, TN on January 2, 1955. He resided most of his life in Scott County, VA, a place he truly loved. He would comment often after returning home from business trips, that Scott County, VA was still one of the most beautiful places in the world. He graduated from Rye Cove High School in 1973 and graduated cum laude from East Tennessee State University with a Bachelors degree. He worked at the Blue Ridge Plant of AGC Industries Incorporated in Kingsport, TN for 38 ½ years where he traveled to over 20 countries. He was a substitute teacher in the Scott County School System for 1 ½ years. Phillip was most recently employed at Techni-Glass Incorporated for 4 ½ years. He received Christ as his Savior at the age of 10 at Lynn Garden Evangelical Methodist Church, where he was a member for several years and served as a steward. He was a member of the Thomas Village Baptist Church for the last 23 years, where he served as a deacon since 2002 and taught Sunday School. He was instrumental in starting the AWANA program in 2002 at Thomas Village Baptist Church and served as commander for 7 years. Known as an avid reader and fisherman, he also enjoyed cooking in his spare time as well as hunting. He loved spending time on the Outer Banks of North Carolina fishing with family every year for the last 35 years. He also served several years on the Scott County Economic Development Authority. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Lester Smith and Jean Munsey Smith; paternal grandparents, Echol Smith and Laura Dillion Smith; maternal grandparents, Everette Roy Munsey and Edith Sproles Munsey. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Rhonda Gail Smith of the home; his son, Phillip Nathaniel Smith of the home and his fiancé Ariel Cornett of Charlottesville, VA; sister, Priscilla Smith of Duffield; two brothers, Danny Smith of Duffield and Mark Smith and wife Rosa of Dryden, VA. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at Thomas Village Baptist Church, 879 Duff -Patt Hwy, Duffield. A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. at the church with Pastor Bryan Gunter and Pastor Gary Edwards officiating. A eulogy will be given by Linda Russell Qualls. Music will be provided by the church choir. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at the Fraley Cemetery in Duffield, VA. Pallbearers are Greg Bernard, Don Carter, Joe Carter, Rick Holland, Kay Jessee, Isaac Overbay, Frank Pennington, and Keith Roach. Honorary pallbearers are deacons of Thomas Village Baptist Church, Benny Beavers, Jimmy Bishop, Michael Carter, Charles Fugate, Jason Hooven, Pat Murphy, David Robbins, and Eddie Robbins. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:55 a.m. The family would like to offer thanks to Phillip’s family physician, Dr. Shelton Hager, his oncologist, Dr. Edwin McElroy, and the Ballad hematology/oncology staff. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Thomas Village Baptist Church, Family Life Center Building Fund, PO Box 267, Duffield, VA 24244. Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City is serving the Smith family.
