Ibrahim "Abe" M. Hussein

Ibrahim "Abe" Hussein of Washington, DC died on Saturday, August 31. He and his wife, Kathleen, were to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in September, alongside their family-- son Tarik Hussein and daughter-in-law Natasha Wimmer of Brooklyn; daughter Angela Hussein Hirsch and son-in-law Aaron Hirsch, of Glen Echo, Md.; and grandchildren Cecily McArdle, Zarya Hussein, Conrad Hirsch, Max Hussein, and Greta Hirsch. Abe took tremendous joy in his family and was the absolute best grandfather--his five grandchildren are shaped by his playful, gentle and generous nature, as are their parents. Born and raised in Egypt, he remained close to his family there and was a beloved brother and uncle to a huge family that now extends across several continents. Abe came to the United States to attend graduate school at the University of Michigan in 1963, and he remained a passionate fan of Michigan football throughout his life. He earned his Ph. D. in education and spent his career in public service, overseeing treatment for people with severe intellectual disabilities in Kansas, Michigan, and New York state governments. Outside of work, Abe devoted himself tirelessly to many civic and progressive political causes. With Kathy, Abe resided at Takoma Village Cohousing, a community he loved and that has embraced them. Friends and family will gather to share memories and celebrate Abe's life at 4 p.m. on September 21 at the Takoma Village Common House, 6827 4th St NW, Washington, DC 20012.
