Mildred Marie Wyckoff
August 25th, 1917 - December 8th, 2023
Mildred Haymond Wyckoff, age 106, died Dec. 8 at Collington senior facility in Mitchellville, Md., one of its longest living and fondest residents. Born Aug. 25, 1917, Mildred grew up on a farm in Wabash County, Ind., and attended township schools in the Manchester area. After high school, one of her jobs was as a seamstress in a furniture factory. At age 21, never having left the Midwest, Mildred traveled by train to the Pacific Northwest. There she met her future husband, Harold, while visiting an aunt’s boarding house at the University of Washington in Seattle, staying to help run the establishment for graduate students. The couple married in Indiana in 1940, on the way to their new life in Washington, D.C., and later, in Silver Spring, Md. Harold’s work as a radiation physicist took him on months-long trips to Europe and other locations, while Mildred raised their two children and volunteered in their school. She served as a school crossing guard in Montgomery County for seven years. When Harold returned from his trips abroad, Mildred would sometimes research and prepare the international dishes he experienced during his travels. She occasionally accompanied him on foreign business trips and welcomed his international colleagues to stay at their home for lengthy periods. A gracious host and expert homemaker, Mildred also was admired for her abilities as a seamstress, crocheter, letter-writer and cook. She enjoyed restaurants and other outings and collected salt dishes and salt spoons. Much loved by her family and friends, with whom she corresponded widely, Mildred will be remembered for her kindness, poise, sense of style, and caring nature. She leaves behind daughter Jeanette M. Wyckoff and son Harold O. Wyckoff Jr., (Alyson), along with grandchildren Whitney B. Wyckoff (Andrew Roehl) and Kenton C. Wyckoff, and great-granddaughter Madeline Roehl. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Harold (1999); sister A. Eileen Meyer; brother George M. Haymond, mother Cleo (“Toy”) Keel Haymond; father George; and stepfather Charles Ingalls. According to her wishes, no services will be held.
