Joseph Patrick Lambeth
January 12th, 1924 - October 12th, 2015
Joseph Patrick Lambeth, Sr., 91, died on October 12, 2015 at Blumenthal's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born January 12, 1924 to the late William Joyce Lambeth and Annie Louise Smothers Lambeth in Guilford County, North Carolina. Pat graduated from Monticello High School in 1941, where he was the president of the student body. At Monticello, Pat played basketball, football and baseball. In his senior year, he was captain of the basketball team. Pat served under General George Patton as a tank commander in the United States Army Company B, 37th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division of the 3rd Army in World War II in campaigns at Ardennes/Bastogne, the Rhineland, and in Central Europe. He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, Army Occupation Medal, EAME Service Medal with three Bronze stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Distinguished Unit Badge. After the war ended, Pat won a scholarship to attend Shrivenham American University in England. When he returned to the United States, Pat attended King's Business College and GTCC before joining Cone Mills, where he worked for thirty years. After he left Cone Mills in 1978, Pat and his wife Panthea sold their home in Greensboro and bought a farm in the country in McLeansville, North Carolina. Pat raised tobacco and cattle and for many years operated a pick-your-own strawberry patch. He moved to Abbotswood at Irving Park in the summer of 2014 and then to Blumenthal's Jewish Nursing and Rehab Center in July 2015, where he lived until his death. Pat made his profession of Christian faith in a barn in Luxemborg during WW II, and he was baptized in a bomb crater in Czechoslovakia. He was a charter member of Memorial Presbyterian Church in Greensboro and was deeply involved in the life of that church for over sixty years. Pat loved baseball. He played for a number of years and managed at the semi-pro level. Pat also coached the Cone Mills Little League teams for sixteen years and had a positive influence on the many young men he worked with. Pat is survived by his sons, Dr. William Rick Lambeth and his wife, Elizabeth; Randolph Jefferson Lambeth and his wife, Kimberly; and Joseph Patrick Lambeth, Jr. and his wife , Deborah. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Anne Elizabeth Lambeth, Scott Davis Lambeth, Katherine Lambeth Zavodni and her husband, Zachary, Rachel Lambeth Marlowe and her husband, Lane, Ashley Lambeth Clarke and her husband, James, and Daniel Patrick Lambeth; his great-grandchildren, Zachary Lambeth Roberts, Margaret Paige Zavodni, Simon James Zavodni, Dayton James Clarke, Rawlins Ashby Clarke, and Madison Michelle Marlowe. Surviving sisters and brother are Peggy Gunn Hopkins, Louan Lambeth Stanfield, and Timothy Alexander Lambeth, as well as many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Pat was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Panthea Huffines Lambeth, his daughter, Judith Patricia Lambeth, his brothers, Donald Michael Lambeth and Phillip Joyce Lambeth, and his long- time companion, Lorena Stanley Murray. The family will receive friends at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service on Friday from 6 until 8 PM. Pat's funeral will be held at Memorial Presbyterian Church on Saturday at 2 PM with burial to follow at Lakeview Memorial Park with full military honors.
