Michael S. “Mike” Woodside – Columbia, SC – Services for Michael S. “Mike” Woodside, 71, of Columbia, SC, formerly of Statesville, NC, will be private. Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, SC is assisting the family. Mike Woodside passed away Thursday, August 30, 2018 at home, with his family at his side. Born in Statesville, NC on March 27, 1947, he was a son of the late John B. Woodside and Virginia Steele Woodside. Mike was a professional firefighter, which he absolutely loved. He served in the United States Air Force at VAFB in Lompoc, CA from 1967 through 1972 where he received his fire fighter training. He later joined the fire department for the City of Statesville where he retired in 1992 as deputy chief. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the years spent on his mini-farm. Mike was an avid sports fan, NASCAR fan and for many years coached midget football with the Statesville Recreation Department. He was most passionate about his family, especially his grandchildren. Mike is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jan Richardson Woodside; son, Michael Scott Woodside (Michele) of Santa Maria, CA; daughters, Kameron Woodside (Pete Rodriguez) of Santa Maria, CA, Megan Woodside Oxentine (Jason) of Stony Point, NC; grandchildren, Colby Woodside, Bailey Woodside, Marc Lopez, Andrew “Drup” Lopez, Samantha Lopez, Tatum Atwood, Jason Oxentine, II, Carter Oxentine; sisters, Shannon Stanley (Richard) of Old Fort, NC, Dale Russell (Jim) of Greer, SC, Kay Stevens (Scott “Bil”) of Statesville, NC; brother, Mark Woodside (Pat) of Statesville, NC; numerous nieces and nephews. Mike was predeceased by his loving pets, Jade and Chance Woodside. The family would like to thank the staffs of Palmetto Health Hospice and Helping Hands Caregivers for their attentive care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Burned Children’s Fund, 169 Ashley Avenue, Charleston, SC 29425, or Iredell County Humane Society, 2643 Fines Creek Drive, Statesville, NC 28625.
