Dennis Joel Wimberly, 71, of West Columbia, SC, passed away April 30, 2022 at his home, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born on December 19, 1950 in Orangeburg, SC, to Dennis and Clara (Simms) Wimberly. Joel was preceded in death by his father, Dennis and his sister, Sharon Wohnig. He leaves behind his loving wife, Mary M. Wimberly; his mother Clara Sims Wimberly; and his sister Peggy (Randy) Poston. Joel and Mary enjoyed their blended family which included, Jennifer (Kevin) Krumnow, Christie (Evan) Norbisrath, Christina (John) Sherbert, Jessica (Chad) McCormick and Dennis (Jenna) Wimberly, Jr., along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren who were the delight of his life. Due to his illness and extensive time away from church, Joel found great comfort from his White Knoll Radius Church Family. He was The Resident Construction Engineer with SCDOT in Spartanburg County, SC for 21 years before coming to Columbia to work in Utilities. Joel served in The US Army National Guard for 8 years. Joel enjoyed his hobbies, woodworking and photography, both of which he passed down to his grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Thompson Funeral Home in Lexington on Friday, May 6, 2022 from 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at 2 p.m. at White Knoll Radius Church, 5181 Platt Springs Road, Lexington, SC. The interment to follow at Southland Memorial Gardens.
