Funeral services for John Newton Campbell (J.N.), 97, of Cayce will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, July 16, 2022 at Kittiwake Baptist Church, with Rev. Timothy W. Sieberhagen officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall at the church. A private family entombment will precede the service in the Southland Memorial Garden Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to Kittiwake Baptist Church, 420 Kittiwake Drive, West Columbia, SC 29170, or to a charity of one’s choice. The family has entrusted Thompson Funeral Home, Lexington with the arrangements. Mr. Campbell passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2022. He was born on May 8, 1925 in Orangeburg, SC. He grew up in Varnville, SC and was the son of the late Dr. John Newton and Mrs. Ruth Rast Campbell. He was a graduate of Varnville High School (1942) and attended Clemson College (1942-1943). He then served in the United States Army Air Corps (1943-1946). After his time in service, Mr. Campbell attended the University of South Carolina and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering (1949). He worked at Plowden Steel Company (1949-1958) and was one of the founders and president of Pioneer Steel Company (1959). In 1991, Mr. Campbell became President of Campbell Steel Company. He was a life member of the Society of Civil Engineers and the American Legion Post #6, a past member of American Steel Construction and the National Society of Professional Engineers-Columbia Chapter. He was a charter member of Kittiwake Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, and also served as the treasurer of the church for over 19 years. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, John N. Campbell, Jr. and Barbara L. Campbell of Greenville, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia C. Derrick and Richard D. Derrick of Lexington, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara C. Owens and William, J. Owens of Ridgeway, SC. Mr. Campbell adored his six grandchildren: Trey Campbell (Amy) of Charleston, SC; Bryan Campbell (Jaime) of Simpsonville, SC; Catherine Taylor (Marshall) of Columbia, SC; Melissa Harder of Lexington, SC; Will Owens (Stephanie) of Chapin, SC and Caroline Owens of Leesville, SC; Great grandchildren; Ellie Graham Campbell, Emily Campbell, Grayson Campbell, and Wyatt Campbell all of Charleston, SC; Gracie Campbell, Avery Campbell, and Ashlynn Lydia Campbell all of Simpsonville, SC; Marsh Taylor, Jack Taylor, and Campbell Taylor all of Columbia, SC; Hannah Harder of Lexington, SC; Tripp Owens and Charlie Owens of Chapin, SC. Mr. Campbell is also survived by his sister-in-law Martha S. Campbell of Columbia, SC and her extended family as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Campbell was predeceased by his wife, Lydia Chisolm Campbell and his brother Marion Rast “Tunky” Campbell.
