Martin C. Sterling
May 15th, 1952 - July 13th, 2023
Martin Sterling, 71, of West Columbia, SC, passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2023. Born in Binghamton, New York, Marty grew up loving sports and the outdoors, playing basketball, swimming, and working on his brother’s dairy farm. Over 50 years ago, he met the love of his life—his wife Marguerite—while she was attending nursing school at Binghamton University. Over the course of the next five decades, the couple moved to Ithaca and then Trumansburg, New York, and had two daughters. Marty had a 28 year career as a jeweler before embarking on a second career as a residential contractor. Following his and Marguerite’s retirement, they moved to West Columbia, South Carolina and have spent as much time with family and exploring this country as possible. Marty will be remembered first and foremost as a loving supporter of his family. We will also miss his warm smile and passionate interests in the world around him. Marty is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Marguerite; his daughter Lindsey Vann and son-in-law Matthew Vann; daughter Katie Sterling and her partner Dave Hunter; sisters and brothers-in-law Barbara and Francis Gannon and Chris and Linda Luck; and many nieces and nephews, including several who were like siblings to him. He is predeceased by his brother Byron Sterling (Dorothy) and sister Joan Buttignol (Roger). A memorial service for Marty will be held on Tuesday, July 18th at 6:30 p.m. at the Platt Springs United Methodist Church in West Columbia. Join the family for a reception in the fellowship hall of the church following the service from 7-8 p.m. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Platt Springs United Methodist Church.
