Shelby S. Gross
September 18th, 1938 - December 12th, 2020
Shelby Gross, 82, of Hopkins, South Carolina, passed away in her home, December 12, 2020 after complications of Parkinsons disease. She was born on September 18, 1938 in Heath Springs, South Carolina, daughter of the late Ruby Horton Stover and David Woodrow Stover. Shelby is survived by her husband of 61 years, Arthur Lee Gross, Jr, daughters Lori G. Wilhoit (Matt) of Hopkins, Jena G. Northen (William, sons David, Clark, and Ben) of Richmond, and son Arthur L. Gross III (Pam, daughter Jessy) of Hopkins, brother Milton Stover (Martha), sister-in-law Linda Stover, and sisters Brenda Horton (Jimmy) Kathy Catledge (Joseph), Emily McDow (Robert), Dianna Clements (Jerry), Mag Rigby, and Delores “Lucy” Holden (John) and brother-in-law David Shepard (Suzy). Shelby had 20 nieces and nephews and a plethora of great- and great-great nieces/nephews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Suzy Shepard of Lake Suzy, FL, brother Lanny Ross Stover of Heath Springs, and granddaughter Elly Blake Gross of Hopkins. Shelby graduated from Heath Springs High School (1956), North Greenville Junior College (1958), and earned her Bachelor of Science Home Economics from Winthrop College (1960). Shelby taught science and home economics for 3 years before becoming a full-time mother and homemaker. She joined one of her best friends, Jane Smith, as co-owner of The Friendly Yarn shop for years, where she shared her talent and passion for needlework with the Columbia community. Prior to her illness, Shelby was active in book club, garden club, and multiple committees associated with her church, most recently at Lebanon United Methodist Church of Hopkins. Shelby was a steady and faithful servant of Christ and lead her life as he instructed, serving others. She was the epitome of a southern lady, smart, beautiful, graceful, kind, talented, loving, yet humble. She will be lovingly remembered as Mumzie to family and friends. As written in the 1960 Winthrop yearbook, “to know her was to love her.” Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday December 17, 2020 at Greenlawn Cemetery at 11am, with Andrew Sizemore of Lebanon UMC, officiating. The family will receive visitors graveside, immediately following the service. Family and friends are also welcome to visit the family at their home whenever convenient for you. We Entrusted Shelby Gross's Care To
Greenlawn Memorial Park
Greenlawn Memorial Park is one of Columbia's most historic perpetual care cemeteries. This gorgeous setting combines serenity, natural beauty, and diligent care for generations of families. North Lake, located in the center of our park, offers a water feature and is the site of many local events, including an annual Easter sunrise service, a Greenlawn tradition for over 50 years. The park also has a veteran's section, private family estates, a columbarium with niches for cremated remains, and an incredible granite mausoleum....
